New Middlesbrough shop unlocks owner’s ambition

A new business in Middlesbrough town centre has unlocked its owner’s ambitions for now, but he is still hungry for more.

Thirty-five-year-old Qazi Rehman has opened Flexpro, offering mobile phone repairs, accessories and phone unlocking, in Middlesbrough’s Dundas Market, and the choice of place and business name were not left to chance.

Qazi says he always wanted to set up his own company.  He worked for a phone accessory shop for four years and was confident that he had sufficient knowledge, experience and drive to go it alone.

He needed to find a location where no similar services were available and he wanted to come up with a different type of name – avoiding the word phone – to keep open the option of one day selling other items.

“A name is very important for a business and I wanted to go with something a bit different, eye-catching and attractive to stand out,” he says. “I’ve always wanted my own business and to do something independently.  It’s a new experience and I’m really excited about it.”

Although determined to make a success of his first venture into business, Qazi is already thinking about opening a bigger shop, and – if all goes to plan – that could be sooner rather than later.

In the run up to Flexpro’s opening Qazi has worked closely with the Dundas Market manager David Harris.  “David has been very good, providing lots of help and support,” says Qazi.

David, in turn, is happy to welcome a much-needed service to the indoor market. He says: “Phones have become such an integral and expensive part of people’s lives that I am confident that Flexpro will do very well here.

“There is also room for Flexpro to grow here.  Many of the businesses which started in the indoor market have grown and prospered there and then moved into shop units in the shopping centre.  Only last month InterStellar Comics moved from the market into one of our shops.  LD Printing, the Festival Shop, Tik Tok, Homefair Blinds, Buckshees Military Surplus and Miss Unique also started in the market and then moved into the shopping centre.

“We still have a few market units available, especially for traders looking to sell toys, music/games/books or fruit and veg.  We are always interested to hear from people with an idea for a new business, or who are looking to open a second outlet for their existing business.

“For new traders who want to test out a business idea, we also offer a small number of Enterprise Units from £60 per week, which equates to just £10 a day, on short term tenant agreements.”
