Two Teesside mums have created new businesses and jobs in Middlesbrough’s Dundas Indoor Market, part of the town’s Dundas Shopping Centre.
Natalie Buckley has set up beauty business Beauty2Glo, giving the previously unemployed mother of two full time work, while Constance Jambwa, who has four children, has started Ebenezer Hair Boutique, creating part-time jobs for her and her husband.
Both women have taken advantage of the Dundas Indoor Market’s initiative to help entrepreneurs test out their business ideas while minimising costs and risks, by offering a limited number of units on flexible terms for £60 per week all in.
Born and raised in Redcar, trained beautician Natalie Buckley returned to live in Middlesbrough in August. Previously a full time mum to her daughter, 11, and four year old son, she decided to return to work, creating Beauty2Glo, when she saw the offer of an enterprise business unit in the Dundas Indoor Market.
“I have worked in salons and as a mobile beautician round the country, but this is the first time I have started my own business,” she says. “It’s tricky juggling work and child care, but the first two weeks have been very good and I am looking forward to building a client base here.”
Natalie is a supporter of Dundas Indoor Market’s initiative. She says: “I would highly recommend this scheme to anyone thinking of setting up their own business. David Harris, the Market Manager is so friendly and makes it so straight forward from start to finish. If it wasn’t for this scheme I would never have been able to set up on my own.”
Beauty2Glo offers a full range of beauty treatments including manicure, pedicure, gel polish, brow wax, lip and chin wax, brow tint, lash tint and twinkle toes.
Constance Jambwa says that business and entrepreneurship is in her blood. She has always dreamt of starting her own business.
She says: “Each of my three sisters have their own business and my three daughters who have gone to university all studied business.” So the healthcare professional from Thornaby could not resist the low cost business trial at Dundas Indoor Market and has set up Ebenezer Hair Boutique selling a range of hair products from wigs and extensions to hair sprays and accessories.
She is relying on the help of her husband Darlo who is studying at Teesside University to become an Occupational Therapist. Before he became a student he worked on markets across Teesside and now works part-time at Ebenezer Hair Boutique with Constance.
The couple carried out research before deciding to sell hair products and have big plans for the business. “It will take time to get established,” says Constance, “but we would like to expand. David Harris, has been very helpful, so I am sure that this will be possible within the Dundas Indoor Market.”
David Harris says: “We are developing a real track record in helping new businesses get started, grow and create jobs. In addition to Natalie and Constance, in August we helped former SSI workers AnnMarie and Charlie Vickers set up Auntie Ambas Treats and Sweets. They have already expanded, providing a seating area for customers, and employ two full time and two part time staff, and we have got a number of other businesses lined up to come into the Indoor Market and Shopping Centre in the next few weeks.
“We are keen to talk to anyone with a business idea. We appreciate how costly and difficult it can be for businesses to get off the ground, so we are providing an opportunity to trade in an established market setting in Middlesbrough town centre at a hugely reduced cost and on flexible terms. It’s a great way to try out a business idea in a secure, managed setting.”
Businesses in the indoor market benefit from Dundas Shopping Centre’s weekly footfall of more than 60,000, the support of more than 20 fellow market traders, and a focused marketing campaign.
